Visiting Students

For the two young adults who were fortunate enough to travel with TNSP life began to take on a whole new meaning.

Rebecca Florczyk, Dena’s daughter, made her first trip to Nigeria in 2007. She created diaries with 12 of her American friends in which they shared pieces of themselves with a girls group Rebecca created at the Ireti Senior Grammar School in Lagos. In exchange the Nigerian girls created books that were given to their American counterparts at home. On her second trip in 2008, Rebecca carried messages and small gifts for friends that were made during that first exchange.

Read Rebecca’s college essay to learn how this experience impacted her.

Also in 2008, Emily Kaplan, a senior at Montclair High School brought 25 field hockey sticks, a donation from the American Field Hockey Association and shared them with boys at the Ramand School in Lagos. The boys were ecstatic, learning and playing alongside their new American friend. In addition, Emily taught journalism to a group of 8 high school students and with them created a newspaper.

Read an article from “Nigerian Students Talk” to understand the issues these young people face.
